Founded in 1871
Saint Lawrence Ambohimanoro School
Over 150 years

Since 1871, Saint Lawrence Ambohimanoro Anglican School, in Antananarivo (Madagasikara), has educated generations of students in knowledge, wisdom and excellence, and continues to do so today.

The school nurtures the intellectual and spiritual growth of its students.
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” Proverbs 1:7a

Saint Lawrence was a deacon and martyr who was burned alive during the persecution of Christians in Rome under the reign of Emperor Valerian.
He was entrusted with the management of the Church’s possessions.
When the Roman authorities demanded that he surrender the Church’s wealth to Rome, he distributed it among the poor and the vulnerable.
The School and the Poor
Many orphaned students and children from financially disadvantaged families are educated at the school.
The school continually strives to support students whose families are unable to pay school fees.
“Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:40b
This places a financial burden on the school, yet this mission remains one of its core foundations and responsibilities.
Although it is an Anglican school, we welcome all students.
However, all students are required to study the Church Catechism and the Lord’s Prayer, and to attend worship every Thursday at Saint Lawrence Ambohimanoro Cathedral.
The School, the Church and the Community

The school cannot be separated from the Church, nor the Church from the school: the school was founded by English missionaries before the church itself.
The English missionnaries work initially focused on teaching reading and writing, using the Catechism and the Bible, to Malagasy people.
First courses took place outdoor.
Saint Lawrence School follows the national curriculum, yet academic success alone is not its sole purpose.
The school seeks to educate students to become responsible citizens, people of integrity, and individuals who contribute positively to society.
Knowledge, Wisdom, Excellence
Supporting the School
The school welcomes those who wish to volunteer their time and skills (teaching, administration, etc.) or provide material or financial support.
“As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead.” James 2:26
